The peroneal nerve is a branch of the sciatic nerve, which supplies movement and sensation to the lower leg, foot and toes. Common peroneal nerve dysfunction is a type of peripheral neuropathy (damage to nerves outside the brain or spinal cord). This condition can affect people of any age.

The common peroneal nerve ( common fibular nerve ; external popliteal nerve ; lateral popliteal nerve ) is a nerve in the lower leg that provides sensation and motor function to parts of the lower leg. When damaged or compressed, it can cause foot drop.

The common peroneal nerve branches from the sciatic nerve . It includes the deep and superficial peroneal branches. These nerves provide sensation to the anterior (front) and lateral (side) parts of the legs and to the top of the feet. They innervate muscles in the legs which lift the ankle and toes upward ( dorsi flexion ).

For partial nerve palsy, more than 80% of patients will recover completely. For complete nerve palsy, less than 40% of patients will have complete recovery. Peroneal nerve in continuity arises from defined etiology will be recovered better than those arise from idiopathic causes. [8]
