Many historical bridges named London Bridge have spanned the River Thames between the City of London and Southwark , in central London . The current crossing, which opened to traffic in 1973, is a box girder bridge built from concrete and steel. This replaced a 19th-century stone-arched bridge, which in turn superseded a 600-year-old medieval structure. This was preceded by a succession of timber bridges, the first built by the Roman founders of London. [1]

Of all the bridges over the River Thames , London Bridge has the longest history. It was the only bridge over London's river until Putney Bridge opened in 1729. The famous Tower Bridge , a little further down the Thames, is often mistakenly called "London Bridge", however London Bridge does offer unparalleled views of its pretty counterpart.

This must-see London attraction invites you to step inside the most famous bridge in the world to explore its iconic structure, spectacular views and glass floor, modern exhibitions and magnificent Victorian Engine Rooms!

London Bridge is a central London railway terminus and connected London Underground station in Southwark , occupying a large area on three levels immediately south-east of London Bridge and 1.6 miles (2.6 km) east of Charing Cross . The main line station is the oldest railway station in London fare zone 1 and one of the oldest in the world having opened in 1836. It is one of two main line termini in London to the south of the River Thames , the other being Waterloo .
